Why is building muscle with weight training important? There are several reasons that you will want to build muscle, but direct weight loss is not actually one of them. In fact, changing fat into muscle may actually cause you to gain weight rather than to lose it, but this is still more desirable than doing nothing.
Changing the shape of your body
We want to build muscle so that we can change the shape of our body. We don’t want to be fat and flabby, instead we want to build muscle, get lean, and sculpt our body so that it is healthy and fit. Believe it or not, doing this may not actually result in any direct weight loss. Once you start to realize these benefits, though, you will realize that this is not a problem. It is nicer to have a muscular shape and be fit then it is to simply drop pounds from your overall weight.
Furthermore, if you are working out with weights and you also change her diet to be healthier then you’re going to be dropping fat from your body and losing weight overall. Just realize that it is not the weight training that is actually going to create the weight loss – instead it will be the healthier diet that results in actually dropping off pounds. That said, you definitely do not want to ignore the benefits of weight training in your approach to fitness.
Being able to do more things for overall fitness
There is an interesting cycle that goes back and forth between aerobic activity and weight training. Most people will never realize or appreciate this relationship in less they actually make the effort to get into great shape.
What happens is that your ability to be active and burn calories is going to be enhanced by the muscles that you build during weight training. This is a slow and subtle shift that takes place over years or months rather than weeks or days. Therefore, most people do not notice the relationship in till they are in great shape and can look back at it.
In other words, if you do weight training and increase the muscles in your body it will have many positive benefits down the road in terms of your overall fitness and health. Some of these are things that you cannot possibly predict or measure in a meaningful way, especially in advance of them happening. For example, I may never have run a marathon if it had not been for weight training that I did leading up to it. In this way, weight training can be part of your overall fitness and health.
Caring less about your overall weight and more about the shape and tone of your body
You should not care too much about your overall weight if you are taking the right approach to health and fitness. Sure, we all want to lose weight and get into great shape and be much lighter, but ultimately what we are seeking is better fitness and health overall. Therefore you should concentrate on three things:
1) Converting fat into muscle via weight training.
2) Being active and burning calories on a regular basis, getting your heart a workout, etc.
3) Vastly improving your diet so that you can lose pounds.
Notice that the only goal listed above that has anything to do with weight loss is in the third point about improving your diet. Most of your effort will actually be on building muscle and increasing your activity, neither of which will directly result in much weight loss. The majority of your weight loss will actually come from making healthier eating choices. That said, focusing only on losing weight through your diet is a huge mistake will cause you to miss out on a ton of benefits that you would otherwise enjoy if you pursue exercise weight training.
Straight weight loss with no muscle development may as well be amputation!
If you want to see what straight weight loss looks like with absolutely no exercise or weight training, just look at someone who is old and possibly dying and is on a liquid diet. Sure, they are dropping lots of pounds, but this cannot be seen as a good thing because they are basically wasting away. This is not the image of health or fitness that we want to attain. Dropping weight just for the sake of being lighter is not a good fitness goal for us to have.
Instead we need to take the approach of overall health and fitness. Using a more holistic approach will allow us to build muscle, become more active, and also lose weight through a healthy diet. We want to get lean and sculpted by building muscle out of our existing fat rather than to simply waste away become lighter.
If you embrace weight training then it may not actually make you any direct weight. On the other hand, if you are converting fat into muscle and also improving your diet than your body is going to become clean and sculpted over time anyway. The results that you get by incorporating weight lifting are going to be far superior to someone who is simply depriving themselves of calories and is wasting away without building muscles. This is why you should seriously consider adding weight training to your exercise routines. My suggestion is to use weight training every other day so that you give your muscles a chance to rebuild. This will also help you to avoid injury.
